Video Transcript : Lets see how we can apply Send Effects & Insert Effect in Reason. I’m actually using Reason 5 right now, but this will apply to all the earlier versions of Reason also.

First, lets add the Mixer. As a sidenote, its always a good practice to actually start from a template project, which already has the mastering suite and the mixer going, so we could work on adding more instrument based devices.

Ok now to add the mixer, right click and select 14:1 which is a 14 channel mixer. Now lets add some effects so we could send in effects from each of these 14 channels. So lets add a delay, reverb & chorus. These 3 effects would basically be the standard to every project that we work with. The reason we call send effects is because we are actually sending the effects from our channel to the effects and by doing this we save a lot of CPU power. Lets see how these send works. When you press the tab key, you can see how the mixer and the effect units are wired. As you can see, the Aux channel sends the effects to the effect unit and this in this case, aux1 is connected to the delay unit, aux 2 is connected to the reverb unit and aux 3 is connected to the chorus unit. Each of these units output is again connected back to the aux return channels.

When you press tab, you’ll get back to the front panel of these devices. Now these are the return effect channels which corresponds to those 4 Aux channels here.

Lets see a small example of how we could apply these effects.

Let create an instrument and select a patch. I already have one of those String patch in my fav list. So I’ll select that. You can even audition by selecting the patch.

This is how it sounds dry, without any effect applied. Now let me add some delay to it. Now lets add some reverb. & finally chorus. So this is how you could apply send effects and its lot easier and a neat way to use effects onto your instrument patches.

Now lets see what Inserts effects are. Well, they are almost the same, except that you get to apply the effect directly on the Instrument, which means your applying it right onto the signal chain itself. So the more insert effects you add, the more you would need to have the processing power. Of course, there will be instances were you would need to add Insert effects, on top of the Send effects that we already saw.

Now lets select the same instrument and load the delay effect onto it. Now you can see the delay unit attached to the instrument. Press tab again and you can see the instrument is routed to the delay unit and then it goes to the mixer for further processing. Thats why its called an Insert effect.

I love to compose music with some kind of a theme in it. Its always fun to score for an imaginative scene/theme in a movie . So this theme is based on a thriller kind of genre that I assumed, which has scenes involving Rain, Storm etc., effects in it. Since it is only a thriller and not a horror based theme, I did not make it fully eery. Making Music from the Home Studio has always been so fulfilling.

I came up with a base tune which gets repeated at the beginning and continues into Strings/Vocal Choir arrangement in the middle and finally ends with a quickie to bring the thriller aspects. Ive added effects to bring the rain/stormy elements in the background. I hope you would like it. Please do pass on your comments.

This new feature of Reason 5.0 is called BLOCKS, meaning you can create and build Musical Blocks with great control over the song you create.

When it comes to arranging your music, its all about putting together the musical elements like intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, instrument solo, break etc., in various segments of the song. Blocks allow you to achieve that in a seamless fashion. Its a great concept of building a workflow in the arrangement. In this video, you’ll see a small example of How to Use BLOCKS in your Song Arrangement.

Many musicians tend to think of music in terms like intro, verse, chorus, breakdown, buildup and so on. With the new Blocks mode in Reason 5 and Record 1.5, your sequencer does too.

Blocks lets you sequence your songs using a more pattern-based approach, with the segments of your song as individual building blocks to be laid out in your arrangement.

Start by creating the discrete parts of your song in blocks mode. When you are ready to start building your song, just switch back to song mode and draw in what blocks should play in the dedicated pattern lane. Use one block for the verse and one for the chorus — or build your song around a single 8-bar loop.

Blocks provide a very fast way of creating a musical structure for your song. But the options don’t end there. With the basic arrangement laid out, you can see the contents of the blocks and create variations and mute individual parts, or add further musical elements in song mode.

A typical use for Blocks is to create your backing track in blocks and then use the song mode sequencer to record vocals or instrumental performances. For music based around a single looped section, one repeated block with automation and mutes of individual tracks added in song mode makes arranging a breeze.

You never have to commit to using either mode – you are free to move back and forth between Blocks and Song mode, and any changes you make in your Blocks will instantly be manifested in all instances of that Block. Need some tambourine on that chorus? Add it, and there will be tambourine whenever the chorus block is playing.

This is the Orchestral Theme Music I composed using Pro Tools 8 & East West Quantum Leap Symphony Orchestra Gold Edition. East West Quantum Leap Symphony Orchestra Gold Edition can also be played by Kompakt player of Native Instruments. The music involves a small theme with 9 basses I recorded and looped. I played the drums using the XPand2 plugin of digidesign and had some harmonies going to give the theme some vocals. The music was sequenced & mixed on Pro Tools 8, the digital audio workstation (DAW). Hope you will like the music.

When it comes to Theme Music, I’m a huge huge fan of John Williams and Hans zimmer. I don’t know how many times I would have heard the theme music of Jurassic Park, ET, Gladiator, Schindlers list, Star wars, The Lion King, Sherlock Holmes etc., I think they have also inspired directors like Spielberg, James cameroon to conceive visuals for Theme music in most of their movies. Truly, their music has always been Classical, Royal and Theatrical.

So here is just a small tune that came to my mind and I tried to arrange it in a way that it would sound like a theme and theatrical . Its great fun to make music from Home Studio. About this theme music, think like it features during the end credits of a movie, where a huge ship is shown sailing in a big ocean from a top wide angle shot . haha Well, the imagination is up to you but I only hope you would like it .

This is a song that is very close to my heart, as it is my first ever full length song that I composed and arranged.  I am basically a tamilian from Chennai in India. It was really a fabulous experience to compose and arrange a full length song .

I composed and arranged the song using Pro Tools 8 XPand Plugin. I used Reason4 for the percussion. I love Reason4 for its superb looping feature. Routing Reason4 tracks to Pro Tools is always a breeze through Rewire.

I personally love to use ReDrum and I always end up using it in all of my song compositions.
